Cameo impressively stages the open-air opera “The Flying Dutchman”

In a large-scale open-air production of the Klaipėda State Music Theatre (Lithuania), Richard Wagner’s opera of the mystical Flying Dutchman was performed only a few kilometres from the place where the first motifs originated in the stormy Baltic Sea: on the hundred-year-old ship lift of the Paul Willy Lindenau shipyard in Klaipėda. The colossal frame constructions and hoists of the historic shipyard provided a spectacular backdrop to fire the audience’s imagination by means of the stage set and lighting design alone. For this purpose, the Lithuanian event technology service provider Baltic Production Service relied on more than 200 outdoor-ready Cameo spotlights.

Milestone dimensions

The dimensions of the open-air opera were impressive: the protagonists played on a 50-metre-long stage and moved far beyond it on the ship and the laterally rigged superstructures, sometimes 40 metres apart. Working with leading Lithuanian lighting designer Andrius Stasiulis, the Baltic Production Service team faced the challenge of setting up a live and camera-ready lighting setup for the Dutchman production (the production was broadcast live on the OperaVision streaming platform) to scenically light the performers. Baltic Production Service was able to call on the support of NicLen for the provision of the Cameo lights:

“In a small market like Lithuania, it’s very important to have a dry-hire partner like NicLen to realise the biggest shows here as well.”

Jurgis Uborevicius, Baltic Production Service

Almost the entire stage was lit with Cameo. Baltic Production Service used OPUS X Profiles for spot and front lighting, while OPUS H5s were mainly used for show elements. The ZENIT W600 and W300 models and the ZENIT P130 LED PARs were used for wash and uplight tasks.

Precise and flexible

With the OPUS X Profile moving head, Baltic Production Service was particularly impressed by the enormous brightness of the 33,000 lumens and the even colour mixing. The OPUS H5 also impressed with its CMY colour mixing, making the beam-spot-wash hybrid the ideal choice for theatre productions for Jurgis Uborevicius. With the ZENIT® series, the magnetically interchangeable diffusers in particular played to their strengths when it came to adapting the lighting to different scenarios according to the situation.
