Living for music – Tilo Pietschmann’s journey from Sales Representative to Rock ‘n’ Roll Library & Music Curator

The Adam Hall Group employs people who love events, music and the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, and few employees epitomise this combination better than Tilo Pietschmann. For more than 30 years, the former professional musician travelled the world as a sales representative for the Adam Hall Group brands. Tilo recently celebrated his official retirement – but anyone who thought that the passionate drummer was quietly saying goodbye to working life doesn’t really know Tilo… In his new role as Rock ‘n’ Roll Library & Music Curator, Tilo is taking on a new, special task: maintaining and expanding the Adam Hall Group’s extraordinary collection of memorabilia from over 70 years of music history.

When asked how he came to take on his new role as curator of Adam Hall Rock ‘n’ Roll after his well-earned retirement, he immediately replies: “I’m not retired!” Rather, the passionate reader of musician biographies is continuing what he has been building up for years together with his son – and Adam Hall Group CEO – Alexander Pietschmann:

“More and more guests from all over the world are now coming to our Experience Centre and asking for a guided tour. That’s why we needed someone to look after the collection and exhibition and also show guests the light and audio shows programmed by colleagues in the adjacent auditorium.”

The interest is so great that Tilo currently gives one or even two guided tours almost every day.

The authentic, warm and enthusiastic way in which Tilo guides visitors through the Rock ‘n’ Roll Library and can tell a story about every exhibit also characterised the 69-year-old during his long time as a sales representative. “I always felt like a link between the company and the customer – and both were equally important to me.”

The starting point for the memorabilia collection was Tilo’s 20th anniversary with the company. To mark the occasion, the Beatles mega fan was given an original Gretsch guitar that was originally owned by George Harrison himself, an instrument which Tilo had already held in his hands several times at a music dealer friend’s shop. “I’ve also often been to the Beatles Weeks in Liverpool and bought old posters and other things. This is probably where my passion for collecting began.” Today, the collection – owned by the Adam Hall Group – includes numerous valuable guitars previously owned by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Allman Brothers, a hat worn by Michael Jackson, a letter signed by all four Beatles, and many other originals and replicas from several decades of music history. Only the Harrison guitar is not part of the exhibition today: “It hangs in my home.”

Every now and then, a treasure escapes the experienced collector: “Sotheby’s recently organised a Freddie Mercury auction in London. There were several original flight cases that Freddie used on tour. As Adam Hall started out as a flight case manufacturer, we really wanted the Queen cases. But the prices went through the roof and were no longer justifiable.”

Normally, tours of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Library are not open to the public, and are primarily available to partners and customers of the Adam Hall Group. “Recently, however, we had almost 40 pensioners from Neu-Anspach with us who wanted to take a closer look. They were totally enthusiastic and felt like they had been transported back to their younger days. For me, these are very special experiences of success that make my heart beat faster.”

With the Rock ‘n’ Roll Library, the Adam Hall Group’s Experience Centre has yet another exciting attraction. Customers and partners who are planning a visit and would like a guided tour with Tilo can register for one by writing to sales@adamhall.com. Of course, the tour can also be combined with a detailed product presentation, or the surround experience and/or light show in the auditorium itself. The heart of the Adam Hall Group beats in the Experience Centre – there is a lot to discover here!
