Lighting for all parts of the show – Cameo inspires at Phantasialand
The adventure worlds of Phantasialand have been captivating children and adults for decades. In addition to roller coasters and theme worlds, Germany’s second largest theme park also offers its visitors several show productions in its own theatres and arenas. In summer 2023, the ice skating show “Rock on Ice” and the acrobatics show “Nobis” were among the audience’s favourites. In the respective show locations – Arena de Fiesta and Wintergarten –, the Phantasialand operators recently converted the entire lighting setup to Cameo.
“We have new shows every year with new acrobatic and vocal acts and new choreographies. That’s why our lights have to suit a wide range of requirements,” explains Nicole Terpstra, who has been working in the lighting department at Phantasialand since 2001 and has been the head lighting designer for the park’s show worlds since 2020. In this role, Nicole has developed the lighting design for numerous productions, including the famous “Fantissima” dinner show.
“Nobis” in the Wintergarten
The Wintergarten – the venue for “Nobis” – is OPUS territory. Here, the setup includes the OPUS X Profile, OPUS S5 Spot, and OPUS SP5 Profile, as well as the OPUS W5 Wash Moving Head. “Due to the high ceiling and the acrobatic and aerial performances, the requirements in the Wintergarten are completely different from those in the other Phantasialand venues,” explains Nicole Terpstra, who is not a fan of over-the-top lighting for artistic shows, but always wants to create the right atmosphere to suit the artists.
“Rock on Ice” in the Arena de Fiesta
“For ‘Rock on Ice’ in the Arena de Fiesta, the lighting setup has more of a rock style,” explains Nicole Terpstra. “This means: lots of lights on the back truss to bring pressure to the front and emphasise the powerful artistry of the skaters.” This is where the EVOS W7 Beam moving heads really come into their own as effect lights. The Arena de Fiesta was also recently equipped with a large LED wall. “We needed assertive spotlights that don’t get drowned out immediately when the wall is playing.”
The Cameo spotlights were supplied by Hupfer Beschallungstechnik from Bonn, Phantasialand’s technology partner. Through Managing Director Guido Hupfer, Nicole also became aware of Cameo’s lighting solutions for the first time: “We tested numerous lights in every price category here at Phantasialand. Thanks to Guido, Cameo was also included.”
“The Cameo lights convinced me very quickly – both in terms of their workmanship and their performance.”
