Light in the old gas tank – Cameo illuminates the Gasklockorna in Gävle

Cylindrical brick buildings, industrial charm and versatile use: Gasklockorna in Gävle, Sweden, is one of the most impressive event venues in Scandinavia. Originally used as a gas holder for the city’s energy supply, the circular buildings now host cultural events, concerts, conferences and theatre performances. For the atmospheric yet functional illumination of the two main domes – Stora Gasklockan and Lilla Gasklockan – the city of Gävle, as its operator, relies on the lighting technology expertise of Center Stage AB and a modern setup of Cameo spotlights.

Long-standing partnership

Center Stage AB has been supporting Gasklockorna as a technical service provider, lessor, consultant and integrator since 2007. The latest commission comprised a permanently installed lighting set-up to enhance the ambient lighting as well as the targeted illumination of walls and stages. “The two domes offer many surfaces and structures that can be staged to great effect,” explains Robert Berglund from Center Stage. “It was crucial to choose the right beam angles in order to illuminate the high walls evenly without losing light or wasting energy unnecessarily.”

For the Stora and Lilla gasometers, Center Stage opted for the DURA SPOT 100 Install spotlights, which impress with their lighting quality, compact dimensions and low-maintenance design. The RGBW spotlights were positioned and aligned specifically on the round wall surfaces in order to integrate both warm colour gradients and lively colour changes into the dynamic lighting concept. The setup is complemented by the OPUS S5 spot moving heads, which are used on the main stage. “The in-house team at Gasklockorna extensively tested several models from different manufacturers in advance,” explains Robert Berglund. “The decisive factor in favour of the OPUS S5 was the combination of light output, range of functions and price-performance ratio.” For the front lighting of the stage, the team relies on the pole-operated Cameo F2 T PO Fresnel spotlights, which – together with the H2 T Houselights – are also used as house lights.

All lighting fixtures are integrated into Gasklockorna’s existing lighting control system and are controlled via an MA Lighting system – in line with the modular usage concept of the location.
