From old pub to gastronomic highlight – audio and light installation at the Kyma restaurant

1.2 million pounds – that’s how much the operators of Kyma invested to transform the former pub in Waterloo into a modern wine bar and tapas restaurant. In February 2025, the new catering location on the outskirts of Liverpool opened its doors. Greater Than Security Ltd was responsible for the lighting and audio planning and installation, equipping Kyma with a complete package from LD Systems and various Cameo lighting solutions.

Kyma can seat up to 60 guests, with an additional 30 seats on the outdoor terrace. In addition to the normal catering service with background music, Kyma also has a DJ booth for lounge and party use at the weekend. “The client wanted something simple to use and flexible enough to work with different room setups,” explains Wael Hassan from Greater Than Security.

The Greater Than Security team relies on LD Systems DQOR 8 and DQOR 5 2-way installation loudspeakers for the sound system in the indoor and outdoor catering areas. For extended DJ operation, the setup is complemented by LD Systems STINGER 10 G3 2-way bass reflex PA speakers and a STINGER SUB 15A G3 subwoofer. The loudspeaker systems are amplified by an LD Systems DEEP2 600 amplifier (STINGER 10 G3) and an IPA 424 T 4-channel DSP installation power amplifier equipped with an X-EDAI Ethernet & Dante audio interface expansion card. This way, the IPA 424 T can be conveniently controlled via the LD Systems QUESTRA design & management platform.

A QTP 5 touchscreen display with PoE power supply at the restaurant’s reception counter gives staff access to the most important audio functions such as volume, zone and source selection. Flexible content playback via radio/internet radio, streaming or MP3 for restaurant use is provided by an LD Systems RSMP Radio Streaming Media Player. An LD Systems DIO 22 Dante interface was also installed in the DJ booth, which can be used to quickly and easily integrate microphones and players with line level into the system. An LD Systems U508 HHD wireless system with handheld microphone is available for wireless microphone announcements and more.

As soon as Kyma switches to party mode at the weekend, the Cameo moving lights are also set in motion. With the AZOR W2, Greater Than Security has opted for a particularly compact wash moving head that not only impresses as a classic RGBL LED show light with 3,600 lm and a zoom range of 4° – 50°, but also enables single-pixel control of all seven LEDs. In addition, the integrated Eclipse Burst Effect with four additional segment SMD LEDs creates fascinating strobe and pixel effects. A Cameo LUKE 700 RGB show laser and a Cameo INSTANT FOG 1700 T fog machine are used to create additional atmosphere.
